How much vape liquid can I bring back to the UK?

From 1 October 2026, you can bring up to 50ml of vape liquid into England, Scotland or Wales from outside the UK without paying duty, as long as it's for your own use. Go over 50ml and you'll need to declare it and pay duty on the full amount.

Two things catch people out:

• It's measured in liquid, not devices. The liquid sealed inside prefilled pods and devices counts towards your 50ml.
• Nicotine makes no difference. Nic salts, freebase and 0mg shortfills all count the same.

Going over your allowance? It all counts

This is the one that stings.

Bring back 60ml and you don't just pay duty on the extra 10ml. You declare the lot and pay on the lot. Six 10ml bottles means duty on all 60ml, which works out at £13.20 in duty, before any VAT.

And strolling through the green channel while over the limit? Border Force may seize anything you don't declare, and you could face a fine on top. For the sake of a few quid, it's a bad trade.

What 50ml actually looks like

Fifty millilitres sounds simple until your bag's full of pods and bottles. Here's how it adds up in practice:

• Nic salts: five 10ml bottles, eg, PRO Salts or Original Salts
• Prefilled pods: 25 × 2ml pods (which, depending on your destination, could come in single packs or multipacks)
• Shortfills: one 50ml bottle. A 100ml shortfill is double the allowance on its own.

Mixing it up is fine. Two 10ml bottles plus 15 prefilled 2ml pods? That's exactly 50ml.

The small print, fast

It's yours and yours alone. You can't pool allowances with your partner or mates to bring back more.

Selling it on? That's not personal use. Anything for sale or business has to be declared, whatever the amount.

Over the limit? Declare it. HMRC's online passenger service lets you declare and pay duty up to five days before you land.

Landing in Northern Ireland? Different rules

The 50ml allowance is for Great Britain. Northern Ireland works differently.

Coming from a non-EU country, vape products count towards your existing £390 allowance for "other goods".

Coming from an EU country, there's no UK duty to pay as long as the products are for your own use and you carry them yourself. There's a 200ml guideline level, but it isn't a hard limit. Bring in more and you may face extra checks to show it's all for you.
