New Data Shows Half of UK Smokers Reported Intent to Quit
ONS Data: 1-in-2 smokers reported plans to attempt quitting within the next 12 months.
If you’ve been thinking about quitting, you’re not alone; more than half of UK smokers say the same.
New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that in 2024, 56% of UK smokers reported intending to quit within the following 12 months, with 24% aiming to stop in three months.
This comes as smoking rates fell from 10.5% in 2023 to 9.1% in 2024, the lowest proportion since records began.
While fewer adults are smoking overall, many are actively seeking safer alternatives, making this a key moment for adult smokers to explore options like vaping.
Why Timing Your First Cigarette Matters
Research also shows that smokers who delay their first cigarette of the day are more likely to have reported a planned quit attempt in 2024.
Among smokers who reported intending to quit within three months, 46% waited more than an hour before their first cigarette, compared with 23% of smokers not intending to quit.
This behaviour is a strong indicator of motivation to change, and adult smokers may find vaping a helpful, controlled alternative as they work towards reducing or stopping cigarette use.
